Custard Toast

Serves: 1-2

Total Time: 10-15 minutes

Have you ever been scrolling through Tik Tok and come across a recipe that you just have to try?  I am here to tell you, this is one of the many Tik Tok recipes that is, in fact, very worth the hype. This nutrient-rich recipe emulates the delicious flavors of restaurant-style stuffed french toast in the comfort of your own home.

The subtle hints of vanilla and cinnamon allow for the pairing of any fruit the heart desires along with this dish. Based on my experience, however, I would highly recommend using  strawberries. The tangy summer flavor of strawberries juxtaposes the warm vanilla and cinnamon notes, making this a perfect recipe for the transition of summer to fall. Strawberries, albeit tasty, are also a good source of natural antioxidants (Wang).

The strawberries are not the only beneficial aspect of this meal.

Yogurt serves as a probiotic carrier food that can deliver significant amounts of probiotic bacteria into the body. Because of this probiotic component, yogurt is reported to improve lactose tolerance, support immune enhancement, improve metabolic disorder and aid in the prevention of gastrointestinal disorders (Yadav et al.).

To elevate the taste, add a dash of cinnamon to accompany the sweet  vanilla flavor.  Evidence has found  that cinnamon has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects(Gruenwald et al.).Cinnamon has been used not only as a spice, but also as a traditional herbal medicine for centuries.

The last, and most important, aspect of this deliciously light meal is the bread. The hearty nutrients that are present in bread are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, which provides the body with much needed energy (Kourkouta et al.)

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup of vanilla yogurt

  • 1 egg

  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract

  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon powder

  • ½ teaspoon of sugar

  • 2 slices of bread of choice

  • Your fruit of choice

 Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

  2. In a large bowl combine all ingredients listed for the custard mixture and stir, then set to the side.

  3. Begin to slice your fruit of choice, however much or little you prefer, and set it aside with the custard mixture.

  4. Grab 2 slices of the bread of your choice, use a spoon to create an indentation in the center, then lay them on the baking sheet.

  5. Use the custard mixture to fill the indentations in the bread and place fruit slices on top of the custard layer.

  6. Place the baking sheet in the oven for 5-10 minutes or until the edges are golden and the custard has set.

    Serve and enjoy!
